Actually this isn't completely the case, else that Micropolis 4gb drive I
bought at onsale (nary an apple logo in sight) wouldn't have worked...or any
of the other various drives I've had. Apple's Drive utility is specific to
particular _models_ of SCSI drive, but barring the fact that I've scrounged 5
non-Apple branded drives for my systems over the years, of which only two
weren't recognized by Apple's HD Setup (because it was too old..for S&G I dug
out a really old version of HS Setup, System 6.something, and one formatted
just fine...that was a Seagate 25 Mb I picked up for $5 at a swap meet one
time. (I _wanted_ the case and PS, the drive was just gravy, a very, very
_small_ helping of gravy...gad...I remember when a 25 Mb drive was HUGE) The
only drive I've ever had to get a 3rd party setup for was a 120 mb Quantum.
Then again, I never tested it with System 6 or 7 vintage HD Setup's. I ended
up getting Anubis, which worked quite well.

So I've either gotten extraordinarily lucky, and nailed 4 of 5 Apple drives in
a random sampling (which could mean that 80% of all SCSI drives out there are
Apple drives) or HD Setup isn't _that_ picky.

As for _why_ Apple only supported specific drives...until last year they were
giving free tech support on Apple systems...at least this way they had a
handle on the drives they might be working with.
