I have used a Calluna 170mb type III card for boot purposes on my 3400,
just to see if it would work. I loaded 8.5 on using the 8.5 CD installer
in the CD drive. I noticed two things: It's quite slow compared to
booting from the regular HD. The card itself gets quite warm, probably
because it's on and running continuously with no energy saving power downs.

On the plus side, yep, it works. Note that you do have to erase the card
and format it mac, these cards all come formatted dos. Otherwise it
cannot be made bootable.

I usually use my VST 230meg optical drive as the emergency boot disk on
my 3400. Not that I have used it much. To set that up, I simply do a
direct copy of the system on the HD to a 230meg optical, along with my
utilities folder to fix things.
