        You are quite correct about the less-than-adequate documentation about
SFM. In general, for ANY file server, you don't want to share the root
level of a drive for ANY NOS -- NetWare, NT, *nix, OpenVMS, etc...

        The main reason for this is security, and especially if you've worked with
AppleShare 3.0 & 4.x servers you'd know this: Crack open the AppleShare PDS
file and you've broken in to the volume.

        As for the corrupted Desktop File issue, if stopping and restarting File
Service for Macintosh doesn't work, then create a new directory,
MacFile-enable it, and then move the files to the new directory.. Even with
File Server for Macintosh turned off, the NTFS data streams will still copy
correctly, preserving the fragile Resource forks.
