        Dear Michael:

One of my customers has a NetServer LC-II and LD, running NT4/Server. Last
Friday I updated the LD to Service Pack 4, and all went smoothly.

What you want to do is shut down (if possible) the H-P Monitoring
Services: I was tipped off by a very reputable VMS and NT software engineer
at UltraBac that those H-P services can cause all sorts of funky things to
occur.

Whatever you do, for *any* machine you are updating with a new Service
Pack, don't be a "N.E.R.D.:" No Emergency Repair Disk. If you hose the
machine, you can uninstall SP4 (provided you created an Uninstall
Directory) by rebooting and hitting the spacebar for Last Known Good
Configuration. If you can't "escape" SP4, then reinstall NT4 and use your
E.R.D.

To create an E.R.D., Start -> Run -> RDISK /S

 -----

You shouldn't have any problems installing SP4, but *always* be
prepared... Especially if this is a mission critical server.

-> But then again, if this is a mission critical server, you shouldn't be
using H-P to begin with. I ran into a brick wall last Friday night when I
called their NetServer tech support at 9:30 PM Eastern: They were closed!
Hewlett-Packard's NetServer tech support is only open Monday through Friday
7AM to 6PM Mountain. This was absolutely disgusting. Even the "Steveified"
Apple support is better than this.

        Cheers!
        Dan
