Don't know if this one fits into the discussion, but just in case it helps:

It seems that some were reporting their Macs not being able to see
printers and Workstations on the Network. The Tech Information Library
Note (TIL)(#30841) mentioned below discusses just such an occurrence and
the fix (trashing the appletalk preferences and zapping the PRAM --
Parameter Ram --).

Elsewhere on MacFixIt's site was discussed that the printer will not
show up if it has a hyphen (-) at the beginning of its name, since this
is the method of getting a menu to show a divider line in the menu bar
and is passed on by the new OS 8.5

If you use a hyphen at the beginning of the name of the printers on the
network, you may not see the printers.

> iMacs and G3s may fail to see Ethernet network A new TIL file (#30841) notes: "New iMacs and G3s may initially be unable to see the local AppleTalk services on an Ethernet network. In the Chooser, zones may fail to show, as may printers and other workstations running filesharing or other AFP servers. The solution is to delete the AppleTalk Preferences file and then zap the PRAM of the Mac
