[WinMac] RE: NT e-mail access from Macs

Here's how I configured a couple of POP3 mail clients (Eudora-Mac,
Outlook Express-Mac) to connect to an Exchange 4.0 server.

SERVER CONFIGURATION (Very simple, notwithstanding what your NT support
folks have to say!)

Bring up the Exchange user account, go to the "protocols" tab and make
sure the POP3 protocol is enabled for that mailbox

Expand the tree under your site's name and go to Site > Configuration >
Connections > Internet Mail Connector

Click on the "routing" tab and check the box for "Reroute incoming SMTP
mail". The routing table should look like this:

Sent to: Route to:
eisenbrauns.com (your domain here) <inbound>

I. TCP/IP SETUP

I. Dialup Configuration (This is optional for remote dialin via PPP from
a Mac. Disregard the PPP info if you are on the directly on the network)

A. TCP/IP control panel configuration

The interface varies depending upon the version of dialup software used,
be it McTCP or TCP/IP or what not, but the IP info is the same
everywhere:

Connect Via: PPP (or ethernet if on the network)
Configure: Using PPP Server (or DHCP if on the network--its been a while
and I'm doing this from memory)
(IP address, Subnet Mask and Router info will all be supplied
automatically by by the server)
Name Server Address: ???.???.???.??? (Your server's IP number here)
NOTE: if you want to use your server's name instead of IP address, you
must set up a hosts file on your mac. I have not included instruction on
how to do this here).
Domain Name: YourDomain.com and ExchangeServerName.YourDomain.com (two
entries on separate lines)

B. Dialer Configuration (remote access)

Name: Your NT Account alias (Often your first name)
Password: Your NT Account password
Phone number: (your server's modem)

II. POP3 EMAIL CLIENT CONFIGURATION (SHOULD WORK FOR ANY POP3 CLIENT,
EXAMPLE USING EUDORA)

IMPORTANT: Whatever client you use, don't forget to check the "Leave
Mail on Server" button in your settings (Special > Settings > Checking
Mail in Eudora) so that you don't delete mail off the server as its
downloaded to your client. (Assuming you are connecting remotely and you
don't want your email removed from the server each time you get it)

A. Example: Eudora 1.5.1 configuration (Special > Settings)

A. "Getting Started" page:

        POP Account:

                NTDomainName\Joe(NT alias)\JBlow@???.???.???.??? (IP
number of Exchange server)

        Real Name:

                Joe Blow

        Connection Method:

                MacTCP (or TCP/IP)

B. "Personal Information" Page

        Return Address

                JBlow@eisenbrauns.com

        Dialup user name:

                Joe

C. "Hosts" page

        SMTP:

???.???.???.??? (your Exchange server's IP number (leave
Ph, Finger and DNS load balancing blank)

D. "Checking Mail" page

        Check "Leave mail on server"

        Check "passwords" for Authentification Style"

All other settings are up to your discretion.

NOTE: You will need to provide a fully qualified domain name even when
emailing someone else being served by the same Exchange server (and on
the same network). You Can't just mail to "Jack" and let the server
resolve the mailbox (as if you were using the Outlook client) your
client must send "JBlack@eisenbrauns.com" even though your message
doesn't gets rerouted be the server to the appropriate mailbox without
sending it through the internet gateway.

Naturally, if you are doing this remotely, you need to open a PPP
connection before initiating a mail transfer. The first time you do may
be LONG, because all of the email in your inbox at on the Exchange
server will be duplicated on your mac at home. Thereafter they will be
syncronized everytime you dial in.

NOTE: You can also configure the Mac Outlook Client for remote access to
your Exchange mailbox via PPP although doing this is hardly documented
(I had to go to technet to find out), but doing this requires that you
set up a hosts file on your remote macintosh. If you need instructions
on doing this, let me know.

Hope this helps.
