[WinMac] AppleShare Client 3.8.1 requires NT server service upgrade?

After upgrading to 8.5 (the NT4 server - SP3 with hotfixes - has
remained unchanged) the new system comes with AppleShare
Client 3.8.1.

I have some problems with documents sitting on the NT server.
A folder with shared resources, fonts etc.

Everything is in Japanese and there hasn't been any issues up until now
but for some reason all of sudden they've become corrupted and appear
as garbled inaccessible documents and not the nice fonts that they used
to be...

Same thing accessing the server from different Macs with 8.5...

Is there something with the new 3.8.1 client that doesn't play with NT?

Is it only a Japanese thing?

Apologies for the narrow scope of this question, but it means a
lot to us...
