[WinMac] RE: MS Exchange Server
Sam Heldenbrand(SHeldenbrand[at]Eisenbrauns.com)
We are a small company (20 email clients, about half of them Macs) running MS Exchange off an P200 NT box with 128 Meg of Ram. We also use this box as a file server, and so far it has worked reasonably well. We're set up on a dial-up basis with our ISP, (the server dials in and gets our domain's mail every 15 minutes). The Mac clients work, but they are quite fat and slow (fine on a G3). They support Internet mail very well, as well as html mail, etc. They don't support forms and some of the proprietary groupware Exchange features that have been implemented in the Windows client. I've also set up several Macs for remote dial in to the server using PPP so people can get their mail from home using a Mac with the Outlook client. Setting this up is not really documented, if at all (I had to hunt it down on TechNet to figure it out). We did have our Server crash on us a couple of times, and I can tell you that restoring Exchange after things get corrupted is a real bear. If your not interested in groupware functionality (I know you said you were) I would recommend accessing the Exchange mailboxes via POP3 from the Mac and using your favorite Mac client, such as Eudora or Emailer rather than the Outlook client.
Sam
