[WinMac] PDFWriter vs. Distiller

I've been using the old Distiller 2.1 for a couple of years and just a few
weeks ago bought the whole Acrobat package (3.0) that also has the
PDFWriter. The PDFWriter is quicker to use since it makes the PDF file
right then and there in one easy step where the Distiller requires me to
make a PostScript file first which is what I'm used to doing.

I even once exported a Freehand file to EPS and then Distilled that and it
seemed to work fine. The time before that I printed the Freehand file to a
PostScript file and that worked too.

My question then is when do I know which route to use to get to PDF? Most
of the time I'm converting PageMaker files and so I've been using the
Export to PDF function and then Distilling to get the PDF. Some of our
designers want to be able to make PDFs of their work so they can email
their clients an electronic proof and it seems the PDFWriter might be
easier and quicker for them.
