Typically a networked or networkable printer has its own software for
printing directly to it w/o involving a server. For Hewlett-Packard, it's
the HP JetDirect Port which is a component of the JetAdmin software freely
available from their web site. Looking in my NT printer port options there
is also AppleTalk Printing Devices (only works w/ NT Server), Digital
Network Port, Lexmark DLC Network Port and Lexmark TCP/IP Network Port. I
would imagine Epson has it's own software for their networked printers.

Also, there are lpr (which comes from the UNIX world) clients available. If
the printer supports the use of lpr (I don't recall what is necessary),
they should work. QVT/NET is a shareware package of network clients &
servers and it includes an lpr client. I know almost nothing about lpr but
it seems to be very different from a printer driver. Instead you send a
file to the printer directly to the printer using the lpr program, not from
within the normal Windows print dialog in any given application. This
QVT/lpr has Text or Binary transfer options so I'd guess that it's only
good for printing plaintext or sending postscript files to postscript
printers.
