You can indeed change the default font in Outlook to something more readable
on the Mac (such as Arial 12 pt), but then your email messages to PC users
would have fonts that look abnormally large.

The real problem is Microsoft's Arial font for the Mac. The hinting is
terrible, and boldface or italic versions are completely unreadable.

What I did to address this problem was to take a more readable screen font
and rename it Arial. I used Geneva. Geneva is very readable at small sizes,
and in bold/italic. I duplicated Geneva, and opened the duplicate font
suitcase in ResEdit and changed all the naming conventions so that the
system now thinks Geneva is Arial. I then tossed Microsoft's Arial in the
Trash.

The upshot is that I get a readable font for display, and PC users still see
Arial in messages from me.

If you like, I can email you my customized font so that you can try it
yourself.
