Hear hear--my story exactly. Before I made the move to buy my eight
Power Mac 7200s two years ago, I had a long talk with our IS (MIS)
department, in which I told them I wanted Macs, regardless of what
*they* wanted me to get. Their reply was, "Okay, but if you get
these machines, we won't have anything to do with the servicing or
even the installation", and I said, "Fine!" (I didn't _want_ them
touching those machines)! I was quite confident in the abilities of
myself and my Mac-partial co-workers to maintain the machines.

In the two years since we got the Power Macs, I've had countless
memory problems on the Toshiba 486 laptop I have here, and on the PC
I'm typing this email on right now. I've had problems with the
CD-ROM drive in this computer, and when the scanner that I ordered
came, MIS kept both the scanner and the PC for FIVE MONTHS and still
couldn't get them to work together. This, not to mention that when I
got the computer back, my .wavs and MIDI no longer worked well, the
CD drive skips through a 74-minute audio CD in 90 seconds, and I
no longer have enough memory to run DOS apps from Windows. But,
rather than call MIS _again_, I've decided to leave well enough
alone.

However, in this same time period (2 years), I've only had one
problem to call in about the Macs. One day, I arrived at work to
find a diskette stuck halfway out of the floppy drive. When I pulled
it out, I found the door on the diskette was evidently loose, and had
come off in the drive. I called Apple, they sent a guy over the next
day to replace the drive free of charge (still under warranty).

I think the point had pretty much been made before now (that Macs are
cheaper and easier to maintain than PCs), but I just thought I'd
offer my $.02.
