[WinMac] Help! Appletalk/IP works but not ping

Also posted to AppleshareIP list...

This has me completely stumped. How can Appletalk (both personal and
AppletalkIP via different machines) possibly work but not ping?

Situation is several Macs (G3 running AppleshareIP, 8500 running personal
filesharing) and two windows machines (Toshiba laptop running Wingate to
give internet access to the LAN machines) plus a Gateway box where the
problem lies. Both Windows boxes are running Copstalk.

Everything else on the network works fine except for the Gateway box. It is
completely dead to ping traffic, both coming and going. But it shares
Appleshare files just fine! That is, it sees both the G3's AppleshareIP
files and the 8500's personal filesharing files with no apparent difficulty.

I thought Appletalk worked by encapsulating Appletalk packets inside IP.
But most of all, how can I get IP stuff running on the Gateway box?

I'm really stymied by this one. Hub lights say cables are fine. Networking
control panel stuff re: Copstalk configuration seems OK unless I've missed
something nonobvious.

Ping/FTP/Telnet used to work just fine from the Gateway and is rocksolid on
the other system. I think I broke it when I was stumbling around, trying to
get Microsoft's VPN stuff to work over the Wingate proxy stuff (no luck
there at all).

Can someone please help?
