If you have 24 MB RAM you can use a 24x CD. Considering how cheap RAM is
nowadays you should go ahead and add two 32 MB sticks or maybe even two
64s while you're getting your new CD drive. This will work. I've done it.
And consider a third-party drive such as a LaCie or APS while you're at
it. The Apple drives are excellent, but the third-party drives are just
as good and usually carry a better warranty.
