While lower-end and older printers may get confused, the newer
LaserWriters handle these connections seamlessly. I was part of the
tech-support group that worked with the engineers at Apple to make this
work, mainly because I was tired of telling people they had to reset DIP
switches to change protocols. The printer reads the header information on
the print job and switches protocols automatically. There is no magic to
this, and it works as advertised.

We had our 12/640 receiving Ethernet jobs from Macs and Windows jobs from
the parallel port with no problems. We switched to Ethernet for both
platforms as soon as we had an extra IP address for the printer and could
set up a print queue on an NT server.
