What you might want to do is Re-initialize the drive and re-install, making
sure you install all upgrades you can find.
I have installed several G3's with AS 5.x and have not had the kind of
problem you observed.
and although it is a *LOUSY* NOS compared to NT, IntraNetware,or (the best)
Linux/SAMBA/NetAtalk it works for small networks.

BTW , How many machines do you have in your home lan? if it is only about 5
or 10, just use file sharing on the Mac, the performance
 is only a little worse than ASIP5 - ASIP 6.x with MacOS 8.5 should be a lot
better (and eliminate the need for copstalk). surely it can't be any worst.
