[WinMac] AppleshareIP. Argggh!

I've just added a MacG3 server and a GatewayPC to my home LAN. Its driving
me crazy!

The first problem was a dialog saying "please insert disk @#$@#$", where
@#$@#$ is complete gibberish. I must have hit cmd-. a million times. I'm
guessing there's a bad alias somewhere thats causing this. Clueless so far.
Doubt its one of mine; I suspect it was a network volume being used by
whoever installed this software at the factory.

In trying to get past that one, I downloaded the AppleshareIP 6.0 beta,
hoping the new install would clean up the mess. No such luck. Still getting
the "insert disk" dialog. After clicking past that a few hundred times, I
got to the AppleShareIP WEb and File Server dialog, where the system hung
hard. Going to reboot it once I send this.

At some point just prior to this branch of the search tree, I was getting a
message that the "Sharing Setup" control panel wasn't right. There's no
such thing as a Sharing Setup cdev on any of the many mac systems I have.

To get past that I rebooted without extensions, deleted the users and
groups preferences, and got the File Sharing cdev to run again (wouldn't
with AppleshareIP installed). Sure enough, the password field had
disappeared. Added one, and managed to get past the blockage.

There you are. Dead in the water. Completely confused and even more
frustrated.

PS: All this is with a brand new right out of the box G3, with all
software preinstalled at the factory. All I've done is configured a hosts
file for my five machines. DNS and ping tests work fine. So does plain
filesharing, between the macs and also to the PC (which is running
Copstalk).

Can someone please help? Thanks!
