[WinMac] modem compression not working(?)

Brian,

You might/probably have everything set up right. There are many factors
which determine your modem's speed. What the modem is rated for DOES NOT
mean that is what it will run at.

For instance many 56K modems can not reach 56K speeds because the person is
too far from the main switching office. When they are too far they have to
go through a repeater, these repeaters destroy the 56K signal and force the
modem to negotiate to a lower speed. This is not a limitation of the x2
modems. Noise on the phone line will also lower the modems speed. A friend
of mine could not get past 28.8K because a local Radio station created too
much noise on the phone line. We could listen to the radio on his phone.
;8-)

A more sinister factor that lowers modems speed is you are limited to the
speed of the modem you DIAL IN TO. You can not expect a 56K modem to get 56K
throughput if the receiving modem can only do 28.8K! What is worse is if the
modem you use has a proprietary compression scheme, that scheme will only
kick in if you dial into that uses that scheme. The compression scheme is a
problem for 56K modems that do not use v.90 standard.

Then there is the issue of having the right modem cable. High speed modems
need an extra wire in the connectors that enables the higher speed
communications. I do not remember at what speed this factor kicks in at.

Then again, not all of the older Macs support the higher modem speeds do to
limitations of the serial port. I understand this is not a limitation of the
Power Macs.

Happy Computing,

Tom
:8-)

PS Although I reference 56K modems the concepts apply to any modem.
