At my work, we are starting to experiment with web browsers for shared
data bses for planning. We're pretty rough at it right now, but I made a
couple of quick ugly data bases and used the automatic "web companion"
to get them up and running. They are for sure ugly when they get to the
web (a couple of them actually have rather nice interfaces in FileMaker
itself). Anyway, if you want you can go and look. Of the data bases
listed at my site, three are running on a PC networked by ethernet to
the server, and one is running on another PC networked to the server.
FileMaker is not installed on the server itself. I suspect that they
would all run much faster if the $200 version of FileMaker were
installed directly on the server. Hope to accomplish that this week.
Meanwhile, you can see that they are very, very slow to load over the
internet, and quite ugly once there. I have not yet learned the CDML to
make pretty interfaces function correctly on the net. They do run almost
adequately fast on the local network, but over the web, they are slow.
If interested, you can go to http://mermaid.spawar.navy.mil and click on
the "DataBases" button and see what happens.
