I didn't see that this part was discussed by anyone else, so here goes.
I would create a volume alias on the desktop of the enclosing folder
(ie. COMP 201) that all users have read access to. Create their own
directory inside the folder (makepeace) If the user double clicks on it,
they will get a login prompt. Type in their username and password, and
they will have read access to the enclosing folder and read/write to
their own folder. We also set it up so that in the other student folders
the students have write access, but not read access. This created a
class (or in our case faculty) drop box area.
