There is no registry for the extensions in the DOS world as there is for
the Type/Creator on the Mac. I have asked many poeple and about
everybody only knows what he or she has on their computer if that.
NT has file mapping, and are in the process to see how well it works.
Our NT server has a directory that everybody can access, irregardless of
the location in the building and the computer used. So far, we did not
to have to bother with extensions. NT provides a file mapping service
and we are just now to look into it. There is a PC Exchange Preference
file available on InfoMac that has a very long list. If you cannot find
it I can send you one.
The biggest problem we encountered is on the PC side where most simply
have absolutly no idea how to handle the extensions. Fortunately, thank
to ignorance, most leave it along, but most cannot crasp that DOC has no
associated program.
There us a shareware utility Drop=80Rename that will do file mapping as
well as fix names. This is great for individual files. This can also
be accomplished with simple Apple Script applets.
If we cannot get the NT server to do some mapping, I will install old
harddrives in our computer lab that have a DOS format (use FWB Toolkit),
and all a user has to do is drag a file from the server onto this disk
and the PC Exchange maps the type/creater. The file then can be moved
back to the Mac's HD.
