Not a real time solution, but have you looked at NameCleaner by
Sig Software http://www.sigsoftware.com
Manipulates file names for DOS, Windows 3.x, 95, NT, Unix, NetWare and
other foreign file systems. Can add Macintosh Type/Creator codes to
files with definable PC/Unix extensions. Can remove non-viewable
characters, such as "smart" quotes, and pad out punctuation marks (with
exclusions). Append information (size, date and type) about individual
files and apply a dictionary for type phrases.
Another possible solution is Drop Rename by Chaotic Software,
http://www.chaoticsoftware.com/
Drop Rename performs many different types of renaming operations on
files and folders. It lets you create custom self-running scripts called
"Renamelets," supports conversion to DOS naming formats, conditional
renaming, wildcard search and remove, file numbering, and more. Fully
multi-threaded so it runs great in the background.
By the way, the descriptions of both of these products comes from
MacWindows, http://www.macwindows.com/ A great resource for anybody
interested in integrating Macs and Windows.
Good Luck
Harris
